Homeowners who intend to use LED strip lights in their bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor areas should look into installing LED tape that is waterproof. In most instances the use of LED ribbons that are waterproof is not necessary.

IP Coating
LED tape that is water resistant comes with a special coating of plastic that is often referred to as its IP rated coating. What this coating does is ensure that moisture is unable to reach the inner workings or circuitry of the LED tape. The level of protection that is afforded by a fitting with IP coating can vary significantly and can range from providing full protection to zero protection.

Standard IP
IP65 is the standard coating for waterproof tape. This coating comprises of a silicone gel component. Minor water or moisture exposure can be handled by lighting with IP65 rating. This means that jets, splashes and partial condensation will not be a problem with this type of coating. Therefore IP65 rated fittings can be installed in bathrooms and kitchens where water outlets and plumbing is present. Often times places as such restrict the use or location of a light fitting, however if the correct LED strip is used these locations will not pose a problem to the installation. On the other hand it is not advised to submerge this type of lighting since water will be able to work its way into the unit and then damage the inner circuitry.

Benefits
One of the main benefits of fittings with the IP65 rank is that even when cut it retains its waterproof feature. Most kinds of LED tape are unable to withstand water once cut. The waterproof coating is immediately compromised even if the incision is minute. The IP68 LED tape is one such example, this type has a sleeve that is hollow and made of plastic that the tape is slipped into. Thought it does offer protection that is better it even can not be cut if needed. The tape will end up exposed to water once it is snipped and the internal components will be damaged.

Power Source
When picking out LED tape that is waterproof it is vital to think of the units that are peripheral. Conventional drivers and power supplies or amplifiers and control units in the case of LED that is RGB tape are not made to be resistant to water. Units like these must be kept far away from any moisture. If it hard to avoid it would be best to locate and use IP ranked versions in its place. Do not ever think of immersing these devices.

Standard Tape
For the rest of the applications, using the standard variety of LED tape will work just as well. It should however be note that the IP ranked coating is not deigned purely in regards to proofing the tape. It is also created to ensure a longer lifespan since it safeguards the tape from any trauma or contact that can damage it physically. This characteristic is particularly advantageous in areas that are likely to come into physical contact routinely.
